Timperley Cricket Club is saddened to hear of the recent passing of honorary lifetime member Brian Groves at the age of 87. Brian played for TCC for 30 years from 1959 to 1989.
Through his time at Timperley, Brian captained multiple sides, the 1st XI from 1970 to 1975 and then again in 1977 and 1978. Brian was widely regarded as an attacking and innovative captain for his time, who disregarded the draw at all costs. As his 1st XI career drew to a close, Brian continued to lead TCC sides, captaining the 2nd XI in 1980 and 1981, before drawing a close on his cricketing years captaining the 3rd XI in 1985 to 1989.
On the pitch, Brian was an all-rounder, scoring 5,382 runs and taking 142 wickets.
Brian’s bests:
Batting - 138 not out vs Northwich in 1963.
Bowling - 6 for 59 vs Leigh in 1982.
Outside of cricket, Brian did his national service with the RAF, serving in Singapore in the early 60s. He was deemed as a talented footballer in his youth before dedicating his life to cricket.
Our thoughts are with Brian’s family and friends in this time of reflection.
Anyone that intended to go to Brian Groves funeral, Dave Cain has advised that it will be a non-attendee funeral as per Brian's wishes.
The executor intends to hold a wake at the club in the new year.
